KELLEY was born in Mason City, Iowa (the River City of “The Music Man,” and the town where Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper crashed and died.) He grew up in Ogden, Iowa, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in July, 1957. Following boot camp he was selected for flight school and received his wings as a Naval Aviator in 1959. During his 18 years as a Marine pilot he flew 13 different aircraft models amassing over 5500 mostly accident-free hours. During the Vietnam conflict he had three in-country tours flying observation aircraft (“birddogs”) and attack helicopters (“Hueys”) with Marine Observation Squadrons 2 and 3. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1977, he earned a degree in Art from San Diego State University, taught computer programming at Coleman College, worked in a bronze foundry, and was MIS director at Prescott College. While working at Thumb Butte Bronze in Prescott he was heavily involved in the production of Neil Logan’s sculpture of two marines which stands in the Prescott town square facing Whiskey Row. Retired once again, he lives with his wife, the former Patricia Feulner, and their two cats in Prescott, Arizona. |
